Reading a Pad Mounted Transformer Nameplate
The nameplate is the only authoritative record of what a unit actually is. Serial number, kVA, primary and secondary voltage, impedance, temperature rise, BIL, fluid type and gallons, weight and the tap arrangement all sit there. A photograph of the nameplate answers most questions faster than any datasheet.
What every field means
| kVA | Continuous rating at the stated temperature rise |

| HV and LV | Primary and secondary voltage, in the GY notation above |
| Impedance, %Z | Drives fault current and voltage drop. Needed for any coordination study |
| Temperature rise | 65 C is standard. 55 C units run cooler and cost more |
| BIL | Basic impulse level, the surge the insulation is built to withstand |
| Fluid and gallons | Mineral oil or ester, and how much. Matters for spill containment |
| Taps | How many steps and whether they are full capacity |
| Weight | Total and untanking, for rigging |
Why it matters commercially
A nameplate photograph settles most disputes about what was actually delivered. When buying a used or reconditioned unit, the nameplate plus a recent oil test tells you more than any description. Ask for both before money moves.
